Woman and Light

Oil pastel on paper.
This is perhaps the only painting i have made at one sitting (and within an hour too!). I initially intended it to be a full colour painting, but realized too late that i had just three colours left in the paint box, the ones used in this. This is also special in being one of my first paintings where i did not use the pencil at all, not even for outlines.

Thank you, Feroze bhai and ghetu...hey ghetu, this is not inspired by Ravi Varma's work. i saw this woman in a bengali TV serial, in a scene where she's about to light a lantern. the picturisation was so stunning, i decided to paint it. the face, however,is not that of the actor on TV and i have also done away with the lantern. too many elements!

Hey Tuhin,

This is beautiful.
I particularly love the contrast the bindi and the sindoor have to the picture.
